Go from Front to Back<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\nSometimes the people in first few rows will pay attention, while people at the back are harder to wrangle. Don’t let them get away with it.<\/p>\n
First, let them know you see them: “Hey guys, back there. I see you.\u201d Talk to them, or even embarrass them a little, \u201cOh you thought by sitting in the back you were safe. Not during my show.\u201d<\/p>\n

Second, invite them into the action: \u201cPay attention to me or I\u2019ll pay attention to you.\u201d Do anything to let them know that you’re in charge and you’re going to do your best to make them laugh. If you’re having fun, they\u2019ll want to join you in the fun. \u00a0Once the front and the back of the room are engaged, the middle generally follows.<\/p>\n
Third, don\u2019t just drone through your show without paying attention to the audience. They\u2019ll feel safe and continue to do their own thing. If they know they\u2019re not safe from you attention in the dark, they\u2019ll pay attention.<\/p>\n
